We have big news! In August we will begin one of the biggest adventures so far in our lives. We’re packing up and shipping out… to the Netherlands! 🇳🇱 Piet was offered a job in Amsterdam, and we accepted!
Portland has been our home together ever since we got married 7 years ago (and home to Keven her whole life). We have such a close connection with our community here and it’s going to be a tough transition, but we’re super excited to have this adventure together and to be closer to Piet’s roots.
We’re going to miss so many of you in Portland, and we’ve had more than one weepy moment thinking about the people we’re leaving. We’re planning on having a home in Leiden with a spare bedroom and we’d love for you all to come visit! Maybe not all at once though. 😛
We’re also going to arrange a big going away party so keep an eye out for that some time in July.
In the meantime we’ll be getting ready to leave August 1st, which includes selling the house, arranging for the pets to travel, shipping some of our belongings, and having an estate sale for the rest.
We love you all and hope to spend time and enjoy the Portland summer together before we head out. Happy times!
Lots of love

On Monday I turned the grand age of 30. To commemorate the day I decided to have a day to myself to do a few of my favorite things. So, for posterity, here's a brief run down of how I spent the day.
I stopped by my favourite coffee shop (Albina Press), managed to grab my favourite couch, and enjoyed a latte and croissant with my headphones in, my hoody up, and a book.
I headed over to NW 23rd Ave, popped into a thrift store I like and found myself a nice shirt, because I'm 30 and I deserve a new shirt. While I was in the area I stopped by Sammy's flowers and picked up something nice for my wife.
I delivered the ’something nice’ and enjoyed a Gelato lunch with my wife.
I popped home to pickup our greyhound Django and we went for a long walk at 1000 acres dog park. If you don't know, 1000 acres is a 1400 acre wilderness area with trails, specifically designated for dog walking. Django and I had the park to ourselves due to the rain. It's always great to see Django romping, sprinting, and generally being a happy dog.
I dropped Django off and got to Multnomah Whiskey Library just as it opened. I got a nice comfy leather chair and explained to the server that I had no real clue about scotch except that I liked Oban. He suggested a flight of three scotches, which I enjoyed while continuing my book.
The last stop for the day was dinner with my wife and friends at Screen Door. I cannot understate how much I love the fried chicken. Everyone ordered it and everyone loved it.
All in all, a pretty terrific day.

Friday night we hosted my work BBQ and christened our new DIY firepit. Here's how we did it:
Step 1 - Dig a hole. About a foot deep with a 4 foot diameter.
Step 2 - Fill the bottom with lava rock.
Step 3 - Line the sides with bricks and fill the gaps with lava rock. We got some bricks for free from a friend, but I'm pretty sure it would be easy to find some on Craigslist.
Step 4 - Get Keven to prettify with suculents, moss and some stepables. Throw in some spare logs for seats and...
Total cost? The bricks were free. The lava rock was $5 for a bag. That's it!
Also, lava rock is the new cow bell.

Spoiler alert, it's a dog not a child. Don't want to get anyone too excited. Anyway… :)
On Saturday May 27th 2013 a very nervous, very tall, red-brindle greyhound named Slider walked into our home for the first time. Slider was his track name, it didn't suit him. So he bacame Django Reinhardt van Zoen.
For the first few weeks he was nervous and sensitive, but always very sweet and quiet. Each week since, he has become more and more confident.
So far Django mostly enjoys: food, walks, leaning on people, camping, Keven, and (most recently) running like a f**king cheetah.
Folder full of Django photos here.
Thanks to our friends/neighbours Cat and Wade for all the awesome photos from our coastal camping trip this last weekend.

Keven and I had a rather fantastic three weeks in Europe in April. We had a week of celebrations with family for the 100th birthday of my grandmother in the Netherlands. Followed by a week in England catching up with friends. Finally we stopped in Iceland for a week just for fun.
We had an instagram hashtag for the whole thing, enjoy: #vanzoeneuroadventures
